What to Wear for Your First Tandem Flight in Tenerife

For a tandem paragliding flight in Tenerife, wear secure closed shoes, comfortable long trousers or leggings, and layered clothing with a light jacket. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Avoid flip-flops, sandals, loose hats, dresses, scarves and unsecured items that could interfere with the harness or fall during takeoff and flight.

Closed shoes are essential

Takeoff normally requires several committed steps or a short run on natural terrain. Trainers, light hiking shoes or other secure closed footwear provide grip and remain attached to your feet. Flip-flops, open sandals and high heels are unsuitable. Your footwear should already be comfortable — the activity day is not the right time to test new shoes that may cause pain or restrict movement.

Wear comfortable trousers

Long trousers, sports trousers or leggings protect your legs from harness contact, vegetation and cooler airflow. Very loose trousers can catch on equipment, while restrictive clothing can make the takeoff run uncomfortable. Avoid dresses and skirts because the passenger harness wraps around the legs and hips.

Use layers, even when the coast is warm

Airflow during flight and the elevation of the launch can make the experience feel cooler than the resort area. A T-shirt plus a light fleece or windproof jacket is a practical combination. In cooler periods or at high-altitude sites, add another layer as advised by the operator. Use a jacket that can close securely. Avoid loose scarves and garments with long cords.

Sun protection

Use sunscreen before arrival and bring sunglasses that fit securely. Ask whether a retention strap is recommended. A helmet will be supplied according to the operator's equipment policy. A loose sun hat is normally not worn under the helmet and can blow away.

Phones, cameras and valuables

Do not hold an unsecured phone during takeoff. Follow the pilot's policy on personal cameras and straps. The safest simple option is to zip valuables into a secure pocket or leave them with the ground team. If the package includes professional photos and video, enjoy the flight instead of trying to manage your own device.

A simple packing checklist

  • Secure closed shoes (trainers or light hiking shoes)
  • Comfortable long trousers or leggings
  • T-shirt and a light jacket or fleece
  • Sunglasses with a secure fit
  • Sunscreen applied before arrival
  • Water
  • Any medication you normally require
  • Charged phone (for the meeting-point message)

Do not bring bulky luggage to the launch unless the operator confirms storage or transfer arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly in shorts?

Your operator may allow them in warm conditions, but long trousers provide better comfort and protection. Follow the message sent for your specific launch.

Do I need hiking boots?

Usually not. Secure trainers or light hiking shoes are commonly suitable unless the operator provides different instructions.

Will the operator provide a jacket?

Do not assume that clothing is supplied. Bring your own layers unless your confirmation explicitly says otherwise.

Can I wear glasses?

Often yes. They should fit securely under the helmet; sunglasses or a retention strap may be recommended.

Where do I leave my bag?

This depends on transport and landing logistics. Ask before bringing anything larger than a small secure bag.
